Why do I have to downsize a breaker to fit a circuit amperage for AC systems?
When looking to replace a new AC unit, most people are unaware of the need to install a new circuit breaker!
According to the National Electrical Code, the circuit breaker must be sized according to the min/max fuse rating listed on the unit’s nameplate by the manufacturer. Having a correctly sized circuit breaker protects your AC unit from damage due to short circuits and power surges while allowing it to operate correctly on its specified amperage. In general, it is always a good idea to install a new circuit breaker when you install a new AC unit, even if the existing circuit breaker is the correct size.
When you make an investment the size of an AC unit you want to make sure you are protecting that investment. Having a certified electrician investigate your home’s needs and install your new breaker, will enable you to enjoy the summer with peace of mind. Let R&R Electric help set your mind at ease!
